End-of-year 2: Comics

And now it's time to call it a year with two one pagers made in December.

The first one is another result of my reminiscing on Hungary's last appearance at a major football tournament as we finally qualified again for one after 30 years (see previous post). The last time around we thought our team was quite strong, so it was devastating to see them lose 0-6 to the Soviet Union as a nine year old. Better luck this time, lads!

The other one is more cheeky, as it comments on an issue that stirred up public sentiments quite high before Christmas in our fair country. Long story short, Ákos, a big-headed local pop star made some rather arrogant statements on what fulfilment women should strive for in life. Hungarian Telekom terminated his sponsorship as a result, which made the government resentful, as he is very well loved by them, even received a high state award after they had come to power. You can check out the details here: http://hungarianfreepress.com/2015/12/17/akos-kovacs-a-hungarian-pop-icons-jaw-dropping-sexism/

I'm willing to provide an English text, should it be in serious demand :o)

Now, that is really all for 2015. Happy New Year Folks!

End-of-year 1: drawings

Hey People,

A penultimate post before 2015 winds up, the last batch of the year's drawings only for you ;o)

At first, Pique, the mascot of the Mexico 86 World Cup. My thoughts wandered back to the last major tournament Hungary's national team had qualified - and the first one I followed as kid -, as the lads finally made it to next years' European Championship. No big expectations this time around, though.

Now, a real quick 5 minute sketch, depicting a swashbuckling swordman. These doodlings can be very refreshing.

Another quick sketch, this time of my favourite Hungarian actress, Eszter Ónodi.

The odd one out in the batch, a portrait of yours truly drawn by the utterly brilliant artist and comics maker Gergely Madarász.

Finally behold Roque Ja, a giant (and talking) mountain lion from Jeff Smith's epic comic saga, Bone.

Stay tuned tomorrow to end the old year with some newly made comics!

Autumn drawings

In a timely fashion as it is still November and boy, isn't it a warm one.

First of all, a Drink&Drawing, with another mermaid

A possibly Corvin compatible drunken monk

Kicked off Inktober in a quite simple way, I admit

But stepped it up with this fantasy character

And finished with these plainer looking fellas

 That's all for now, Folks!

Into the Woods

It seems to be all the rage at this point of the story... And trust me, the artist is determined to shorten the wait between two pages.

Panel 1
George: Let’s go after them, lads!
Panel 2
Borka: Dad!!
Panel 3
George: Come on! Let’s get them!
Panel 4
Borka: Thank you so much for what you have done, but now I need to disappear!
Panel 5
Borka: I’ll see you later!
Colin: But… Where is she going? And why did she give you a kiss??
Pip: Please, do you think I can help being attractive?
Panel 6
Innkeeper: Young sirs, don’t say a word to the old beardy about the young lady being here!

And now, some bonus features to make up for the time I spent with earning some money: two of the characters in colour.

Borka doing some fencing aerobic, and Colin riding a mount somewhere in the future

Summery drawings - as promised

Only a little later, but hey - that's life.

First of all, a norker, right out of Scott Chantler's Three Thieves comics series. Check the first sample page out for a reference here if you feel like: https://www.comixology.com/Three-Thieves-Vol-5-Pirates-of-the-Silver-Coast/digital-comic/229192?ref=Y29taWMvdmlldy9kZXNrdG9wL3NsaWRlckxpc3Qvc2VyaWVz

Another bloke inspired by a stander-by in Three Thieves, and possibly also by the Black Sails pirate TV series.

Moving on to products of Drink & Draw sessions, here's a party monster probably having something to do with the Vogons from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. A Vogon that has come to its senses, if you like.

Also, a real baaaad karate instructor drawn on a table covering paper placed there for the purpose of drawing on it at a joint called Alap.

In closing for now, a mermaid playing water polo, one of the traditional Hungarian  sports we're still reasonably good at. The idea of drawing a mermaid was put forward by a friend, so I drew this for her birthday as a present :)

Riders Outside the Inn

Well now, here we go again - this time merely two weeks after the Facebook-premiere of this page. It's a disease, clearly. Anyway, here's Mister George as promised and he is even mounted - rejoice everyone :)
Panel 1
Borka: Nice job, gentlemen!
Colin: You were also very convincing, Miss!
Panel 2
Innkeeper: Hey there, we mustn’t let those crooks flee!
Panel 3
Kaspar: Come on, back to the forest… Damn, it’s Corvin’s hounds!
Panel 4
George: Look, it’s that wretched Kaspar!
Panel 5
Younger thug: I’m begging you, let’s surrender!
Kaspar: No bloody way! Get into the trees, I’ll see you all at the cave!

That's all for now, Folks. Stay tuned for some summery drawings coming real soon (meaning real soon).

Corvin - the post long due

Holly Molly, I totally completely forgot to post the last Corvin page here when it got completed three weeks ago.  This Facebook page is a helluva lot successful in making me forget about the blog :/

Anyway, the upside of the matter is that we've moved into uncharted territory now as redrawing was concluded with the previous page. So this is some genuinely new material altogether (or at least it was three weeks ago...)

Panel 1
Thug with moustache: Ouuch… Holy crap!
Tall thug: That was a grave mistake, young lady!
Panel 2
Pip: Really?!
Panel 3
(Pip): What do you think of this one?
Panel 4
Kaspar: You’re jumping around in vain, I’ll cut you up to pieces anyway!
Colin: Let me show you a trick instead, old boy!
Panel 7
Colin: Touché, isn’t it?
Panel 8
Kaspar: Well, so much about this mission…
Panel 9
Kaspar: Let’s get out of here quickly!

Let me show you a little bonus by a way of compensation. A new central character will make his introduction on the next page, to be completed relatively soon. Here's a little preview of him:
Very seasoned followers may remember this gentleman from the unauthorized Chapter 2, which kicked off this blog... a long-long time ago.

Memories of a Happy Festival

Some belated pics of the 11th Budapest International Comics Festival, held exactly four weeks ago at Dürer Kert - same place as last year, and pretty much the ideal venue.

A little warm-up the day before the festival at Roham Bár, our regular drawing spot - sadly closed down in the meantime :(

In the morning of the festival, dedicated comics people making preparations.

Opening ceremony with the international guests. Left to right: Lucie Lomová (Czech Republic), Typex (The Netherlands), Pierre Wazem (Switzerland), Ptiluc (France) and Fabio Celoni (Italy). Presentation of guests done by Antal Bayer on behalf of the Hungarian Comics Association.

The comics fair. There was a real good turnout for the festival, facilitated by the not-so-chilly weather as last year.

The artists' corner. No specific assignment for this year but fun was had by all. Yours truly was even asked for advice by a potential comics maker. Wow!

YT was also involved as interpreter (hence sat in the middle) in a discussion with Lucie Lomová and Typex about their respective theatre crime comics and graphic novel on the life of Rembrandt.

Some cosplayers were also present and sort of stole the show when Euronews interviewed presenter Róbert Vass.

Almost finally, the items purchased. All well worth their prices.

Last but not at all least, Lucie Lomová's special dedication.

We had a good old time again, hope to see you next year!

Pip: Don't worry, he will manage. I suggest we concentrate on these two now!
Panel 4
YIKES! – from behind
Panel 5
Thug with moustache: Young lady, there's no need for violence! Put down that vegetable slicer knife and come with us pl..
Panel 6

February and March Drink & Drawings

We're keeping it up, luckily.

The main topics of the February session were James Bond villains and cats, so I kicked it off with a combined drawing of

Mr. Blowfeld, the classic Bond-villain and his cat.

Next up, a less well-known villain from Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan's last appearance as the 007. Gustav Graves, played by Toby Stephens, who more recently kicks ass as Captain Flint in the Black Sails series.

Last but not least, two cat villains. Improvised fan art attempt for the 1980s classic Hungarian animation movie Catcatcher. The leaders of the cat mob, Mr. Gatto and Mr. Teufel.

Not strictly D&D product, but started at the same venue: a native American girl.

And finally, my sole output at the rather carefree March session,: a big badass all-American machinegunner. This one served to process my experience at the dentist the day before, I believe.

Corvin: Action This Year!

Wow, it's still January but the brawl is on and swords are drawn! It does give me the brightest hopes for 2015.

Panel 1
Borka: Now-now, perhaps something happened on the way that you sirs prefer to keep secret?
Pip: Lovely young lady, I swear to Saint Patrick that we are not hiding anything from you!
Panel 2
Borka: Saint Patrick? I've never heard of him. Is he a saint of Milan?
Colin: No, he's the patron saint of our real home country. You see, our parents came to Milan from Ireland, a place far away West…
Panel 3
Kaspar (dashes in): It’s a robbery! Give us all the money, valuables and women and be quick about it!
Panel 4
Kaspar: Come on guys! ... What the heck are you doing?!
Thug: We got stuck, boss!
Panel 5
Kaspar: Come in one by one, you morons!
Panel 6
Kaspar: You got a death wish, dandy?
Colin: Defend yourself brigand!

Some New Drink & Drawings

We kicked off the new year two weeks ago with the excellent Drink & Draw Budapest crew.
Here's my two creations:

Count Dracula's got the moves

While a shimmering pony can breathe fire

... also two pics of the company and yours truly:

Stay tuned, a new Corvin page is very nigh
